What are the functions of each filter element in a reverse osmosis water purifier

Reverse osmosis water purifiers are a widely used water treatment technology that can filter ions, microorganisms and other impurities from tap water to provide cleaner drinking water. Reverse osmosis water purifiers usually consist of multiple filter elements, each with a different function. The following are the functions and differences of the various levels of filter elements in reverse osmosis water purifiers.

1.PP fiber filter element

The PP fiber filter element is also called the coarse filter element, which is the first filtration of the reverse osmosis water purifier. It mainly uses the structure of mesh and fiber to remove large impurities in tap water, such as sand, soil and rust particles. These impurities may clog subsequent filters, so it is important to remove these large particulate matter beforehand. The filtration precision of the PP fiber filter element is about 5 microns.

2. Granular activated carbon filter element

Granular activated carbon filter element is the second filtration of reverse osmosis water purifier. It mainly removes chlorine, odor, color, chemical pollutants, etc. from tap water through adsorption and chemical reaction. At the same time, it can also remove microorganisms and organic matter from the water. Granular activated carbon filters are usually composed of multiple layers of granular activated carbon, which can improve its adsorption efficiency and lifespan.

3. Compressed activated carbon filter element

Compressed activated carbon filter element is also a kind of activated carbon filter element. Its difference from granular activated carbon filter element is that it uses compression technology, which can compress more activated carbon into a smaller space. This type of filter is easier to maintain than a granular activated carbon filter because there are no issues like debris. At the same time, the compressed activated carbon filter element also has higher adsorption efficiency and longer service life.

4.RO reverse osmosis membrane filter element

RO reverse osmosis membrane filter element is the core part of the reverse osmosis water purifier. It filters ions, heavy metals, microorganisms and other impurities in tap water through the action of a semipermeable membrane. Reverse osmosis membranes have very small pores, only 0.0001 microns in size, which can prevent most ions, organisms and impurities from passing through, resulting in relatively clean water. The reverse osmosis membrane filter element has a higher filtration accuracy than the previous filter element and can remove more harmful substances.

5. Post activated carbon filter element

The post-activated carbon filter element is also an activated carbon filter element, which is located behind the RO reverse osmosis membrane filter element. This filter element is mainly used to remove residual odors, colors and organic compounds to improve the taste and quality of water. At the same time, the post-activated carbon filter can also remove alkaline water quality caused by the RO reverse osmosis membrane and improve the taste of the water by adding minerals.

In short, each filter element of a reverse osmosis water purifier plays a different role in the filtration process, from pre-filtering large particulate matter to removing microorganisms and harmful chemicals, and ultimately providing relatively clean drinking water. At the same time, different filter element materials and structures will also affect filtration efficiency, lifespan and maintenance costs. Therefore, when choosing a reverse osmosis water purifier, you need to choose the appropriate filter element combination and brand based on the water quality of the tap water and actual needs.
